Olivia Gatewood
Known for her abstract expressions, which involve the distortion and rearrangement of the natural order of images, Olivia Gatewood produces artwork that is an expressive production of creativity and uniqueness. A North Carolina native, Gatewood studied visual arts at North Carolina A&T State University and received her B.F.A with honors from California State University in Turlock, CA and advanced studies at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey.
Gatewood’s painting techniques flow with movement that can only be found in the natural world. Although her compositions are abstract in subject matter, Gatewood often provides references to focus one’s attention in her interpretations. She is inspired by nature and music. She uses an unlimited pallet of colors and textures to express her intense passion for life. Gatewood’s artwork has been presented in national exhibits and has won numerous awards and recognition. Most recently, in February she was recognized by Governor Cooper, The NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and the African American Heritage Commission for her outstanding achievements and service to our state and nation.
Gatewood’s paintings may be found in collections as diverse as those of talk show host – Oprah Winfrey, Mitsubishi International in Tokyo, Japan, IBM and SAS institute in Research Triangle Park. Her paintings were displayed on Warner Brother’s nationally syndicated television show, “The Parent ‘Hood”, and a host of feature films. As a cancer survivor, Gatewood seeks to provide a healing and joyful experience for all that view her creations.
